More Music Festivals in Mallorca

Torre Cega y las Serenates d'Estiu Cala RatjadaWe continue to talk about places in Majorca where festivals are held year in, year out.

Since 1998, Pla de Mallorca -a comarca comprising 15 farming districts- has been hosting the Mancomunitat Pla de Mallorca International Festival, going from July to September, which promotes free music concerts at churches, temples and parishes. The small fishing seaport town of Cala Rajada hosts a festival in July called Serenates d’Estiu de Cala Rajada-Capdepera, organised by Youth Music Groups. It takes place in the gardens of the Sa Torre Cega estate, which is owned by the March Foundation.

In the north-west, the Pollença Festival is now a regular feature. It is held in the 17th century convent of Santo Domingo, which has excellent acoustics.

There is room for more than just classical events in the Majorcan summer. Hosted in Sa Pobla since 1995, the International Jazz Festival was created by a group of young people seeking to introduce an element of innovation to the long “pobler” summer. Musicians such as Pedro Iturralde, Max Sunyer or Dave Holland have since raised its profile.

Sóller and Palma gather the best names in folk music. The Sa Mostra Folk Festival, founded by Aires Sollerichs, gathers bands from around the globe in over 8 days in July. Performances are free of charge and take place in all of Majorca’s municipal districts, with Sóller hosting the main event. The Cançons de la Mediterrània festival, hosted by Palma Local Council, has, since 1984, featured sounds and rhythms based on shared cultural heritage. It takes place in Parc de la Mar, with the spectacular Cathedral towering above the stage.
